Strength & Triumph

2000 Elite Terriers Capture EHF Tourney

Nothing has come easy this season for the 2000 Elite Boston Jr. Terriers.

Seven losses by a goal. Three more by two goals. All of which helped contribute to a 0-for-October for the 2000s and a place in the EHF standings unfamiliar: near the bottom looking up.

Through it all, however, our team has kept a positive attitude and a fighting spirit. And no one embodies that spirit more than our fast-skating, hard-nosed center Bryan Tierney.

As we prepared for the annual President’s Day EHF Tourney, our fortunes had turned, having won three of four, with the lone loss a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Jr. Eagles, the No. 9-rated team in the country.

And then the 2000 Terriers family suffered the most devastating loss imaginable.

On the Tuesday before the Friday night opening game of the tourney, Traci Tierney, Bryan’s mom and the quintessential Hockey Mom, suffered a heart attack and was placed into a medically-induced coma.

About 12:30 Friday afternoon, game day, I received the terrible news.

Dad Joe Tierney’s sister Donna called to let me know that despite all the doctors’ best efforts and all of our prayers, Traci was not going to survive.

Disbelief. Shock. Anger. Sadness. Every emotion you can imagine.

The Boston JR Terriers Hockey Club is pleased to announce the addition of the following hockey coaches to our staff for the 2013-2014 EHF season:

  • Former NHL veteran, Mike Grier, will be involved coaching the 2003 Elite team.  Mike Played his collegiate hockey at Boston University winning the NCAA National Championship in 1995 (where he was a teammate of Terriers owner, Chris O’Sullivan).  Mike also earned First Team All-Hockey East and First Team All-America honors that same season.  He then went on to play in the National Hockey League for 15 seasons, playing in over 1,000 games with the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks and Buffalo Sabres.
  • John Flaherty will be the head coach of the 2005 Elite team next season.  “Flash” is currently the head coach at Boston College High School where he was a standout goalie.  He leads a team that is regularly one of the top teams in the MIAA and has coached the GBL Bruins winning two U-18 National Championships.  He was recently inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame and he has the unique distinction of being a “Triple Eagle” having attended BC High, Boston College, and BC Law. Additionally, his assistant coach will be current Terriers coach & skills instructor, Pat Leary.
  • Former NHL & AHL player, Mark Cornforth, will assist Brian Yandle with the 2006 Elite team.  Mark was a standout defenseman at Merrimack College before signing with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League after his senior season with the Warriors in 1994-95.  He signed with the Boston Bruins after that season and played 5 more seasons of Pro Hockey before retiring in 2000.

We are extremely excited about these personnel additions as we continue to raise the bar throughout the Terrier organization.  These coaches are dedicated hockey guys who will share their wisdom, expertise, and experience with all of our Terrier players.  Welcome aboard, guys!
